Popcorn Lung

Everybody loves to eat microwaveable popcorn and watch a movie every once in a while. A man named Wayne Watson in Colorado shows what it can do to your lungs if you eat two bags of popcorn everyday. The Denver resident gained $7.2 million dollars for suing The Kroger Co., Dillon Companies Inc., and Gilster-Mary Lee Crop. He sued the companies for developing "microwave popcorn lung", a disease first reported by popcorn factory workers. Watson developed the disease from inhaling excessive amounts of the popcorn's artificial butter smell when he would open the bag to eat it. The chemical used in artificial butter favors is diacetyl. Thankfully, the major popcorn companies stopped using diacetyl in 2005. It has been said that by 2015, all popcorn companies will stop using the harmful chemical popcorn. Some different ways to make popcorn instead of using the microwave are to cook it on the stovetop or use an air popper.

  1. I would have never thought that popcorn could be harmful in this way.
