why we put pumkins out on halloween

How pumpkins started and why we set them on the porch is from an old legend that originated in Ireland. It's all about a drunkard named Stingy Jack pulling one over on the devil. Irish families told the tale and began to put carved out turnips in their windows to prevent Stingy Jack and other ghouls from entering the home.

Because once he died, he couldn't be let into heaven because of his evil ways, and since him and the devil made a deal about never taking his soul, nor could the devil let him in.

Some had scary faces carved into them to frighten away any comers. Once the tradition hit the United States, Irish immigrants soon realized that the pumpkin, native to the states, was an ideal fruit for carving. That's why you see jack-o'-lanterns on porches around Halloween.

  2. This is pretty interesting, and there is a bit more to the story but I think you did a pretty good job at getting the basics down.
