They Did Stop (The Government)

Good Afternoon concerned or bored students, this is Dr. Cooper. These are troubling times we live in. The government es cerrado. It is CLOSED.
I will do my best to give an explanation of what the heck this is and what it means to you. First off, the military is still functioning, all laws will still be enforced, and riots, while fun, are frowned upon. Every year the government must pass a bill approving the spending budget for the year. The past couple years it has been more difficult to get them passed because Democrats and Republicans are arguing over how much money the government should be spending (Democrats- more. Republicans- less). This year ObamaCare started on October 1st, coincidentally the deadline for the new budget to be passed. Since the House of Representatives (controlled by the Republicans) have unsuccessfully tried to repeal ObamaCare 42 times, they tried to cut off funding for it in the new budget bill, virtually killing it. The Senate (controlled by Democrats) and Obama refused to approve any budget bill that included any altercations to ObamaCare. But instead of compromising, both sides refused to negotiate and BOOM! Shutdown!
When the government shuts down, that means they aren't allowed to spend money for the majority of things. Now, it is technically impossible for the entire government to close without the world ending, so all essential services are intact. The military still gets paid, emergency services, the National Weather system, intelligence agencies, the Postal Service, etc are still operating. Social Security checks are still being sent, for now. All nonessential stuff, like national parks, museums, memorials, staff offices, and most of Washington D.C are all closed. That leaves several hundred thousand government employees laid off, all nonessential workers. Others, such as prison wardens and Washington D.C police, are still required to work but aren't being paid.

Negotiations, if any, are moving at a glacial pace. On October 17th, the government must pass a new bill regarding the so-called "debt ceiling". The debt ceiling is the limit on how much debt the country can have, therefore limiting how much money the government can borrow. If the debt ceiling isn't increased by Oct 17th or worse- if the government is still shutdown too- it would have devastating effects for the world. The Treasury would run out of money to pay people, the economy would tumble, thousands more people would lose their jobs, and chaos could potentially erupt. Most people now think that Congress will make some kind of deal that will combine both issues together and stave off a catastrophe.
That isn't to say people aren't mad. New polls show that 60% of Americans say they would fire every member of Congress if they could. 53% percent of people also blamed Republicans for the shutdown, and 31% blamed Obama. Frankly I'm not suprised.

The following GIF is what how most people feel when they think about the government issues...

If we're all still alive next week then come back for my Random History Blog Article. And if there's an apocalypse, good luck.

World's Ugliest Animal!

The winner for the World's Ugliest Animal goes to... the Blobfish. It has been named the official mascot of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society and earns it's title all the way.

The Ugly Animal Preservation Society names the blobfish as its new mascot after a global online vote. The gelatinous fish lives <!-- -->
</br>at depths of up to 1,200 meters off the coast of Australia where it feeds on crabs and lobsters. It's under threat as it often gets caught up in fishing nets... but you wouldn't want to eat it.

It looks like a big, blobby tadpole with a mass of jelly-like flesh. It has loose skin, puffy, a big nose and eyes that stare at you constantly. They grow to about 12 inches and don't get much bigger. They live off the coast of southeastern Australia and Tasmania. Blobfish perfer to lay low, about 2,000 to 4,000 feet on the bottom of the ocean.

Although, these fish are very ugly out of water they don't look like that while in the water. They actually look like a normal fish in water but when taken out the pressure of the air and atmosphere changes its appearance to deflate basically. The blobfish lives very deep in the ocean, so deep that our bodies could not function properly. They're jelly-fish skin helps them to be able to survive that deep when most animals can't. Underwater this is what they look like:

Blobfish eat sea urchins and mollusks. These fish are rarely seen by humans because of how deep they are, but when they're seen loads of pictures are taken for how funny they look. You would think nothing would bother these fish but Sharks love to munch on these critters. The blobfish are facing extinction due to deep sea fishing :(

Retro TV: Danny Phantom

Good Afternoon students, this is Dr. Cooper. It's time for a review of another retro show; the only decent show Butch Hartman ever made, and one of the last great cartoons Nickelodeon ever made (next to Avatar). Today is the day of...Danny Phantom.
Danny Phantom ran for three seasons from 2004-2007. It showed the adventures of fourteen year-old Danny Fenton, a half-ghost, half-human, superhero thingy...and his two normal friends Sam and Tucker. His parents are scientists ostracized by the local community due to their obsession with, you guessed it, "ghoooosts!" After his parents try to create a portal to the Ghost Zone (the parallel dimension where all ghosts live), Danny tries to fix it and suffers an accident which gives him ghost powers. He has the power to do normal ghost stuff like fly, turn invisible or intangible, and posses people. As the series progressed he developed more diverse powers such as shooting energy beams from his hands, ice powers, a supersonic roar, and the ability to  make copies of himself (or at least his head).
The show follows Danny as he reluctantly becomes a superhero and protects the town from ghosts, while also trying to keep his identity secret and live a normal life. He ends up with a variety of enemies, both good and bad, including:
Sigh....
  • A ghost who hunts other ghosts
  • A ghost who puts other ghosts in a ghost jail
  • His ex-girlfriend who becomes a ghost hunter
  • His parents, because they want to capture a ghost
  • His Dad's creepy rich best friend, who is also a half-human, half-ghost thingy...
  • His future ghost-self in an alternate timeline
  • And more ghosts!
The series came to a conclusion in 2007 in a rather odd episode where Danny saves the Earth from a giant Ghost Meteor thingy, and gets a statue of him built in every capital of the world...
Nonetheless, Danny Phantom was hugely popular and still has many fans to this day. It still runs on Nicktoons (Nickelodeon's cartoon-only channel), and Butch Hartman has expressed a desire to revive the series someday. Whether or not that will ever happen remains to be seen...

I'll be honest...I have no idea what I'm blogging about next week. BUT there will be a blog next week. Also the school newspaper is out; buy an issue to read my new editorial! (A history of the hot dog).

Costume Time

Where would we be without costumes and creativity? Halloween is just around the corner and its time to get creative! Be original and show your style!

As this shows, a costume can be a representation of just about anything. Pack Man has always been popular and is a creative costume idea, especially for couples. This costume style is simple and can be made at home from something as easy to get as cardboard and paint.

Some people prefer not to bother so much with the actual costume but instead, focus on their makeup to create an effective and memorable look. Above is a photograph of a woman who chose to do this. She has used contact lenses along with her makeup to achieve an original, if not shocking appearance.

People often include even their pets in the creative fun of costumes. Here, a child and his dog are dressed as Harry Potter and "Fluffy," who is the three headed dog from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Some costumes require more effort than others. These fellows have taken costuming to a new level and have dressed as the little green army men that many of us played with as kids.

As you can see, costume ideas can come from anywhere and be inspired by almost anything... This baby looks steamed!

Remember, costumes are meant to be fun! So get creative and enjoy yourself and have a wonderful Halloween!

Starbucks Drink Meaning

For most girls, Starbucks is the place to go during the fall season. Starbucks sells various drinks for every kind of season and all types of people. They sell hot drinks, cold drinks, and desserts. Their sizes do not consist of small, medium, and large but are tall, grande and venti.

If you get the Pumpkin Spice Latte you love a good trend. Chevron, Peplum, and Chambray are the designs you pick for scarfs, nails or clothes. You never post an Instagram picture without your favorite filter and you're the go-to-girl when someone wants the latest news.

If you get a Mocha then work hard, play hard is your motto. You're the team leader and organize the holiday parties with friends. When you decide to do something you do it right. You either go big or go home!

If you get a frappucinno then you're the life of the party! When it comes to planning parties, you're the best at it and you are incredibly creative. But when it's time to just relax and chill you'll stop anything and everything.

SNL is Back

Tomorrow is Saturday, and that means the new season of Saturday Night Live is coming on!

courtesy of: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturday_Night_Live_(season_38)
If you don't know what Saturday Night Live is, or SNL for short, it's a sketch comedy show, with a famous celebrity, joining the cast of hilarious comedic actors, as the host of the episode, and they do funny sketches together, and a famous musician comes on as the musical guest. They also do a mid way sketch called Weekend Update were someone acts like a news anchor and recaps funny or unusual things that happened in the media over the week and tells jokes about them, and sometimes characters come on like they're being interviewed, like Drunk Uncle, Stefon, Opera Man, and Snooki.

SNL started on October 11, 1975 with the first ever host being George Carlin, and musical guests Billy Preston and Janis Ian

And had a cast of greats like Chevy Chase, Dan Akroyd, and Jon Belushi. The show always opens with the phrase "Live From New York, It's Saturday Night!" and then goes to a monologue by the celeb host. It's also had some great comedians make their start as a cast member on SNL. Greats including, Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, David Spade, Will Ferrell, and Tracy Morgan plus many more. It is also one of the longest running shows of all time. The show is always fun to watch, and it's my favorite show.

The show's 39th season starts tomorrow, Saturday, September 28th, with former SNL cast member Tina Fey hosting with musical guest Arcade Fire.

This season SNL greats, and some of my favorite cast members, Bill Hader, Jason Sudeikis, and Fred Armisen are leaving the show after some great years with them. Another SNL great, Seth Meyers is also set to leave mid season for his new job as the host of the Late Night show. 1-year cast member Tim Robinson is also leaving.

With this, 1-year cast members Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, 4-year cast members Taran Killam, Vanessa Bayer, Jay Pharaoh, 5-year cast member Nasim Pedrad, 6-year cast member Bobby Moyinahan, 10-year cast member Kenan Thompson, and 12-year cast member Seth Meyers are staying as the cast members this year with new members, Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney, Noel Wells, John Milhiser, Mike O'Brien, and Brooks Wheelan joining the cast this year as featured players.

I'm super excited for this season and I hope to enjoy it.

Celebrating 10 Years: Pumpkin Spice Latte

This fall marks a decade since Starbucks first launched their signature fall product – the pumpkin spice latte.  But little did you know – it was almost the drink that never was? Ten years ago, while testing out products for the new line of fall coffees, the pumpkin spice latte was initially given a “meh” reaction. It was initially outshined by the cinnamon spice and chocolate caramel. But the developers did see potential. “It wasn’t the natural winner, but there was something there,” said Peter Dukes, espresso brand manager for Starbucks.
http://blogs.wsj.com/corporate-intelligence/2013/08/30/pumpkin-spice-latte-the-drink-that-almost-wasnt/
Today, the pumpkin spice latte is Starbucks’ most popular seasonal drink. “We knew within the first week we had a winner,” he said. At the time, there were 7,225 Starbucks stores. Now there are nearly 19,000. “If we changed the recipe now, we’d have a revolt,” Mr. Dukes said.

DID YOU KNOW: there isn't actually any pumpkin in the pumpkin spice latte?

The pumpkin spice latte is a mixture of espresso, pumpkin-flavored syrup, and steamed milk and is topped off with sweet whipped cream and pumpkin pie spices.
