Spring Valley Girls Basketball Upcoming Season

Basketball season is just around the corner here at the Valley. With just a week away from opening practice, the Girls Basketball team is looking to make a statement this season. After having success for the past several years, Coach Bo Miller is looking to repeat again this year, and make it back to the State Tournament. The schedule this year appears to be a tough one. While several teams in the conference have dropped to Double A, holes in the schedule have been filled with great matchups against Fairland High School of Ohio, and Wellston High School of Ohio. The usual anticipated rivalry games with Huntington High and St. Albans are on the schedule as well. The Region for the Lady Timberwolves has also changed. Parkersburg South has entered and could be a potential threat for the teams chance of making it back to Charleston. The Lady Patriots have been ranked number two in the state for the past several years. The first game for the Lady Timberwolves will occur on December 6th at home against Ripley at 7:30, followed by a matchup with Capital on December 8th at home as well.

College Basketball Season

It's early fall and that means college basketball season is approaching.  Each year basketball season typically starts in the month of November.  Some teams have already played some scrimmage games against their own team.  For example, the University of Kentucky starts the season out with Big Blue Madness, Syracuse University does Orange Madness, and the University of Louisville begins with their Red and White game. This year the season is starting on November 11th.  Teams play games through the beginning of November to typically around the end of February or the very beginning of March.  Then comes conference games and March Madness.  Currently Duke is favored to win the March Madness Tournament.

NFL Safety Rules

                          Many many people watch the NFL and love it. The Superbowl is one of the most watched sports on TV nowadays but many people including me are getting aggravated at the sport. The reasoning for this is the new safety rules that they keep updating and changing. It has gotten to the point where you can barely hit anybody anymore without getting a targeting call called on you. One of the best parts about watching football is when someone knocks the crap out of somebody else. I mean I get why they have changed the rules because of all of the concussions and the old football players that have gotten brain damage. These concussions and brain damage lead to tragic things like depression and suicidal thoughts, but they have updated the helmets. Sometimes the helmets don`t really make a difference though. Look your brain is surrounded by liquid called cerebrospinal fluid and when your head moves or gets hit in a violent way your brain slams against your skull causing you to get a concussion. That is why helmets don`t really make a difference but they do somewhat. All that these rules are doing is protecting the players which is the most important thing but the sport just is not the same anymore. That is why people are getting aggravated at football, the referees, and the new rules.

So far, the Marshall football season has been a disappointment and a bit of a let down. The team is currently on the bottom of the rankings in the conference with just a few games left. There has been few positives this year, but the most exciting thing of this year is how young this team is and how much upside this team has. Though this year may be rough, people are looking forward to next year because of more experience and a couple of transfers and new kids coming in to play. The Thundering Herd and their fan base can look forward to next year to be better than this year and more exciting.

Dia De Los Muertos

Dia de los Muertos is the time of the year when families and friends come together to honor their deceased loved ones by building their own shrine to them. It is said that because they do this, their loved ones will never be forgotten and they will always be connected though they are physically separated by death. There are several more rituals like cleaning and decorating grave sites, making food for the deceased that you put on their graves, or you could buy or make sugar skulls and pan de muerto. Dia de los Muertos is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, coinciding with another holiday that Roman Catholics call all saints day or all souls day. In most parts of Mexico they honor the children and infants on the 1st and the parents or adults on the 2nd. They do this by referring to November 1st mainly as Dia de los Inocentes or day of the innocents and November 2nd as Dia de los Muertos or day of the dead. People celebrate Dia de los Muertos differently but they all they al have a blast doing it.
