Godzilla 2014 Roars Success

Godzilla 2014  made $93.2 million on opening weekend. It also made $103.4 million overseas, amounting to a breathtaking sum of around $196 million world wide. With Aaron Taylor- Johnson as Ford Brody, Ken Watanabe as Dr. Ishiro Serizow, and Bryan Cranston as Joe Brody are the stars in the movie, it scored a 6.19 out of 10 in the movie theaters. Yes, they are now working on a Godzilla sequel.
Godzilla 2, which is still in development, will be released on June 8th, 2018. Gareth Edwards is returning to direct Godzilla 2 after he's finished with the Star Wars movie he is working on right now for Lucasfilm. I also went around asking 10 random students who have seen Godzilla 2014 what they thought of it all the way around as movie. I asked them to rate the film either excellent, average, or poor. I got 6 students that said it was average, and 4 thought it was excellent. There was nobody who thought it was a poor movie.

iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Apple came out with new information about the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on September 9, 2014. It is supposed to be released in stores this Friday September 19, 2014. With many new changes, it is sure to sell.

The new features of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus include a bigger screen, better display, a thinner design, and a better camera. The iPhone 6 has a screen of 4.7 inches and the iPhone 6 Plus has a screen size of 5.5 inches. The display is now an HD retina display which makes colors brighter and gives a better contrast. Also the overall design has been thinned down. The 6 has a width of 6.9mm compared to the iPhone 5s whose width is 7.9mm. The 6 Plus has a small width of  7.1mm which is great for it's large screen size. Lastly, the new iPhones have an even better camera. They have a faster auto focus for even clearer pictures, and an all-new sensor helps focus pixels. The iPhones will also have iOS8 installed when you get them.

Hawaiian Shirt Friday!

Good Afternoon students; this is Dr. Cooper. Welcome to a new year of...me. Last Sunday I pondered for 37 minutes over what to write about, and whether or not I wanted it on our blog or my newspaper column. However, after a curious pilgrimage to all the local Goodwills on Saturday with Senior Class President Joshua Billups, I knew there was only one thing I could discuss with avid enthusiasm...

Hawaiian Shirts.

They are a fascinating phenomenon; Light, comfortable button-up shirts with floral designs and unique color schemes. Hawaii's number one textile export. On the islands they are considered to be formal attire, worn in the business and government sectors. My colleague Mr. Billups and his associates have an almost-absurd obsession with this clothing from paradise. Fascinated, I sought to know exactly where they came from...

It all started on June 28, 1935 when the Honolulu Advertiser printed an advertisement for "Aloha shirts" (known as Hawaiian shirts to mainlanders). They claimed the first Hawaiian shirt was sold by a Japanese immigrant named Miyamoto Koichiro around 1915. After the June 28 advertisement, Hawaiian shirts were rapidly purchased, creating a booming new market.

Hawaiian shirts were introduced to the mainland after World War II when returning veterans from the Pacific and Asia brought home the shirts from their stop in Hawaii. Beginning in the 1950s, air transportation led to an increase in tourism to the islands. This made the shirts a hot product for tourists wanting a unique piece of Hawaii.

Pres. Billups

Hawaiian Shirt Fridays

The concept of a day for people to wear Hawaiian shirts was the brainchild of Bill Foster, president of the Hawaii Fashion Guild (yes there is such a thing..). In 1966 he introduced Aloha Fridays, where every Friday workers would replace their business attire with colorful Hawaiian shirts. It was extremely popular with young adults and soon Hawaiian shirts became common in the workplace every day of the week. Eventually "Aloha Friday" spread to the mainland, where it inspired today's Causal Fridays.

In March 2014, Senior Class President Joshua Billups began a campaign to bring "Hawaiian Shirt Friday" to Spring Valley. "Well uh me and Dylan [Smith] just decided to wear Hawaiian shirts on Friday and try to start a trend. Uh that's my quote." Every Friday Pres. Billups and two to five other people don a floral shirt in support of SV's Hawaiian Shirt Fridays.
If you wish to participate in this patriotic celebration, Hawaiian shirts are available at local Goodwills at affordable prices.

My Starbucks Rewards Prgram

With fall weather approaching and the release of the Pumpkin Spice Latte, coffee drinking will be on the rise! Starbucks has an amazing program called the Starbucks Rewards Program; this will benefit the occasional coffee drinker over the course of a year. The center of the program is the Starbucks card; this can be virtual - on your smart phone - or an actual card. With each transaction you make using your card, you earn a star! You start on Welcome Level, then after five stars you reach the Green Level! This promotion entitles you to free refills on coffee and tea. In the case that you obtain thirty stars in twelve months you reach the coveted Gold Level! Shortly after reaching Gold, you will be sent a physical gold card; with every twelve stars you get a free drink! To continue being a Gold member, simply gain another thirty stars within twelve months! While explaining this program requires a lengthy paragraph, it is quite simple; if you love Starbucks, I suggest you join the Starbucks Rewards Program.
