Macy's Day Parade

       Macy's Day Parade is just 29 days away. 

The 87th Anniversary Thanksgiving Parade returns to kick off the with its giant balloons, floats of fancy, marching bands, performance groups and of course Santa Claus. Parade starts at 9:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day and last until 12 p.m. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will step-off at 77th Street and Central Park West. The procession will travel down to Columbus Circle, turn onto Central Park South and march down a new path via 6th Avenue/Avenue of the Americas to 34th Street. At 34th Street, the Parade will make its final turn west and end in front of Macy’s Herald Square. A Holiday Treat for Children Everywhere, the motto of the Macy’s parade has stood for 86 years and will continue to usher in the season of joy for years to come. More than 44 million people watch the parade on television each year. It was first televised locally in 1939 as an experimental broadcast.

Dr. Cooper: Why Pokemon X and Y is Inadequate

Good Afternoon students, this is Dr. Cooper. Halloween is just around the corner, but a History-Of-Halloween post just didn't seem appealing to me, so I am writing an OP-ed instead.
As all of you are surely aware by now, Pokemon X and Y were released this month for 3DS, Nintendo's newest console (which received tepid reviews). Reception, surprisingly, has been overwhelming positive.
Fans are calling it the greatest Pokemon game ever...except me. As a lover of History and Tradition, I do not like major change. This year has been filled with many changes from the (temporary) disappearance of Twinkies, to my favorite SNL actors leaving, to the recent elimination of the McDonald's Dollar Menu. But Pokemon is where I draw the line. Being a person who was an elementary school kid during the age of the Gameboy Advance (and later the original Nintendo DS), I grew up with Pokemon. Though they underwent many changes during the transition to DS from Gameboy, I still loved them. I stopped after Platinum, however, because I felt it was becoming too much. To this day I'm still implementing a one-man boycott of Black and White. When rumors for X and Y started swirling on the Internet, I of course wanted to see what new "improvements" had been made to the franchise. I was not pleased with these "improvements" and here is why.

The Graphics

Pokemon is well known, even defined, for having classic 2D sprites in every generation, defying the 3D transformations of other Nintendo stars like Mario and Zelda. But now in these new games, the entire format has been changed to 3D graphics. Everything looks completely different.While 3D graphics work well for other games, they are not fit for the 2D world of the Pokemon franchise. You've basically just made an entire new game. While Nintendo probably did this to increase sales and popularity for the 3DS, it is a sad, sad break from tradition.

More Pokemon

X and Y introduces roughly seventy or so new Pokemon. While this isn't nearly as bad as the 156 that were made for Black and White, it's still bad. There are now over 700 different Pokemon, making it difficult for even the most hardcore player to remember all of them, not to mention all the types and moves. Sure, variety is good, but there has to be a stopping point eventually. I was OK with Generation III Pokemon, and even Generation IV, but it has simply gone too far now. We must remember, Pokemon is still a children's game. How can you expect children to know the names of 700 individual Pokemon? Plus if they can, then why can't they remember the names of every president or every element?...


Battles

With more and more stuff to do in X and Y, there's less emphasis on the main component of Pokemon- battling. Now you can play with your Pokemon, feed them, groom them, ride them, make videos or pictures, and go on unimportant side quests...all of which detract from the original objective of training and fighting with your Pokemon. Sigh...

Mega Evolutions

The amazing Mewtwo...forever ruined.

What I dislike most about Generation VI....Mega-evolutions. A new ability has been introduced, which allows certain Pokemon, under certain conditions, to "Mega-Evolve" and temporary change form for one battle. Basically a ripoff of Digimon. I don't like Digimon. Many Pokemon have been revealed to have Mega-Evolution forms, some even have two. For the life of me I simply don't see the point of it. Pokemon are assumed to be the equivalent of animals, so how can holding an item turn them into some freaky monster Power Ranger-wannabe form? It's supposed to make the Pokemon stronger in battles, but that's what normal evolutions are for. Plus it gives an unfair disadvantage to the opposing trainer if they don't have a Mega-Pokemon. Also, some Pokemon just simply weren't meant to evolve. My most hated addition? Mega-Mewtwo. Mewtwo was already epic to start with, not to mention being a legendary Pokemon. Why evolve him?

So there you have it, my opinion of X and Y....Undoubtedly 97% of all Pokemon fans will love these new games. But not me. The one positive outlook on this is that Pokemon will not be going away anytime soon. As I look back, I realize that Pokemon has gone on to the next generation, and must adapt to meet their new tastes. I'm not happy with it, but I understand their reasoning. So good luck Nintendo. Live long and prosper.

Book Review: "Paper Towns" by John Green

Paper Towns by John Green follows the story of high school senior Quentin Jacobson, who has been in love with Margo Roth Spiegelman from afar since they were children growing up together. Quentin and Margo bonded when she showed up at his window, in the middle of the night, looking for revenge on her "frienemies", as they could be called, and seeking his help in doing so. Shortly thereafter their all-nighter, Margo goes missing. This is not uncommon for Margo, as she was always seeking new adventures. She would often run away from home, but she would leave clues behind, because she always wanted to be found. Quentin devotes the remainder of his senior year to finding Margo, but will he find her alive?

I read Paper Towns a few weeks ago. The book was filled with suspense, caused by the constant "Is she alive? She's alive! No, she's dead!" questions that John Green poses in your mind. I have read almost all of John Green's novels to date (currently working on An Abundance of Katherines), and he has never once disappointed me. John Green is an emotionally stable adult, or so he poses, yet he can capture adolescent instability so perfectly in his books. I hate to say it, but it's like he understands what it's like to be a teenager without forgetting as he matures, as most adults do, which is something that I enjoy in young adult novels.

Anyway, Paper Towns was a very suspenseful book. Q, as Quentin is referred to often in the book, is always looking for Margo. He even recruits her friends to help. He finds clues as to her location, but he never can put the pieces together. He remembers something she said, on the night that they exacted Margo's revenge, "The towns were paper, but the memories were not." This leads him to believe that she was somewhere that she had fond memories of. And so, Q follows Margo's trail of clues, trying to find her, as he always does, but he never can. Every clue that she left was a dead end, so it seemed.

I am trying my very best not to give away any clues to how the story ends, because I definitely recommend reading it, or any of John Green's novels.

It's not even hard enough to be made out of plastic. It's a paper town. Nail Polish, A Form Of Art

 Nail polish has been around practically forever and every girl loves it! There are countless designs and ideas that can be expressed through something as simple as this type of art. With Halloween around the corner, there are several ideas for themed nail art. For example, you could create creepy ghosts or monsters. Ocean Info & Pics.

     There is so much that we don't know about our oceans. Maybe this is because less than five percent of our oceans have been explored. Those are some crazy statistics, considering that seventy percent of the earth consists of water. But all in the same sense, it's hard for us to explore. We don't have the technology that will even go half way to most parts of the ocean floor. Regardless, there are at least 3,000 or more floats that go up and down the ocean every day to collect data.

     Another reason we don't know very much is because without the technology, exploring the ocean floor is next to impossible. It's also a pretty scary thing to think about- sending humans down somewhere that we know very little about. It's said that on the ocean floor, mountain ranges with thousands of valleys are wider and deeper than the Grand Canyon. Just think about how big this would be if we could find out more information. We could add so many new species to the world, because 297 new species were found in a single column of volcanic rock. 

     Many people argue that we have explored much more of the moon than we have even begun to consider exploring of the ocean. But this is kind of understandable considering how deep that the ocean is. One of the deepest parts is known as Marianas Trench, and it is seven miles deep! It is located in the western part of the Pacific Ocean. The very deepest part of the ocean is known as the Challenger Deep. It isn't much deeper than Mariana's trench, but it is definitely wider.

Time change

On November 3, the time will fall back an hour. That means we get an extra hour of sleep until the next time change, which will make us lose an hour. At 2:00 AM the time will then go back to 1:00 AM. Some people think it is weird how this happens and often wonder why. I'm just glad we gain an hour this time.

Why does this happen though? When Daylight Savings Time is here we lose an hour. But this occurs so we have more daylight during the summer time and less darkness. Daylight Savings Time started in 1916 by a guy named George Hudson.

 

What we are about to experience very soon is known as the ending of the DST. We gain an hour to have more time during the day for work since it's getting colder out and we would rather stay in anyway. Every year these happen differently because DST starts on the second Sunday of March and ends the first Sunday of November. Over seventy countries worldwide now do Daylight Savings Time.  The only states in the U.S. that don't observe DST are Hawaii and parts of Arizona.

Spider Web Pumpkin Cheesecake

     Here is a delicious new recipe to try this fall! Spider Web Pumpkin Cheesecake will be worth your time and it will leave you craving for that second slice. Ingredients, Instructions, and Tips are listed below.

.Ingredients.
18 OREO Cookies, finely crushed (about 1-1/2 cups)
2 Tbsp. butter or margarine, melted
3 pkg. (8 oz. each) PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese, softened                 
3/4 cup sugar
1 can (15 oz.) pumpkin
1 Tbsp. pumpkin pie spice
3 eggs
1 cup BREAKSTONE'S or KNUDSEN Sour Cream
1 square BAKER'S Semi-Sweet Chocolate
1 tsp. butter or margarine

 Instructions.
1. PREHEAT oven to 350°F if using a silver 9-inch springform pan (or 325°F if using a dark 9-inch nonstick springform pan). Mix cookie crumbs and 2 Tbsp. butter; press firmly onto bottom of pan. Set aside.

2. BEAT cream cheese and sugar in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed until well blended. Add pumpkin and pumpkin pie spice; mix well. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing on low speed after each addition just until blended. Pour over crust.

3. BAKE 50 to 55 min. or until center is almost set; cool slightly. Carefully spread sour cream over top of cheesecake. Run knife or metal spatula around rim of pan to loosen cake; cool before removing rim of pan.

4. PLACE chocolate and 1 tsp. butter in small microwaveable bowl. Microwave on MEDIUM (50%) 30 sec.; stir until chocolate is completely melted. Drizzle over cheesecake in spiral pattern. Starting at center of cheesecake, pull a toothpick through lines from center of cheesecake to outside edge of cheesecake to resemble a spider's web. Refrigerate 4 hours or overnight. Store leftover cheesecake in refrigerator.

Tips.
* For easy drizzling, pour melted chocolate into small plastic bag. Snip off a small piece from one of the bottom corners of the bag. Gently squeeze bag to drizzle chocolate over cheesecake as directed.

The Fault In Our Stars

The Fault in Our Stars is written from the perspective of 16 year old Hazel Lancaster who suffers from terminal lung cancer. She meets Augustus Waters, who is recovering from osteosarcoma, at a Cancer Kid Support Group. Although this is a book about cancer, it is not a cancer book. It is not your typical 'tragic' book and frankly, I think it is a lot more than that. Throughout the book, I really warmed to the characters, especially Augustus who is not only charming and kind but very witty. The characters are written in such a way that they seem very very real and that is both the book's strength and weakness because personally, I was incredibly attached to Hazel and Augustus. Hazel and Augustus mutually fall in love with each other and use Augustus' "cancer perk" to visit Amsterdam to meet their favorite yet reclusive author. However, the cancer kicks in. Like a lot of John Green's books, this has the theme of the value of youth and life running throughout it. Despite the fact that in its essence it is a love story, it is more than that. It is a short-lived tale of friendship and it really does emphasis how short life is. Spoiler alert: it is extremely likely you will cry and/or be speechless at the end. The film of this book is also being released next year so you should definitely read this before watching it!

Fallsburg Haunted House

Random History: Coca-Cola...Drink Up!

Good afternoon students, this is Dr. Cooper. This week I felt like writing the history of a beverage. I wanted to do tea, but its history is too complicated; a bunch of stuff about China, India, and Britain that I really don't care about. So today we shall study a more modern thirst-quenching icon: Coca-Cola.

 
Coca-Cola is the world's most popular soft drink, and is sold in every country except Cuba and North Korea. They are mainly well known due to their extensive advertising campaign; Coke signs and symbols are everywhere, a virtual tattoo on the arm of America. In its 127 years of existence, Coke has created a fascinating history of...historyness.

It all started around the late 1800's when soda first became popular. Many pharmacies began selling it because people at the time believed that carbonated water was good for your health (then again, they also thought radiation was good for you too). Coca-Cola itself was invented in 1886 by Colonel John Pemberton, who was trying to find a cure for drug addiction. Coke was marketed and sold as a medicine, and claimed to cure headaches, stomachaches, nausea, and morphine addiction. This might be true, considering that cocaine was an ingredient in Coke at the time. (I'm being serious) Coke contained 5 ounces of cocaine per gallon; it was removed from the recipe in 1903. Afterwards Coke quickly rose to the top in the fiercely competitive beverage market. By the 1930's, it had become a national icon. The famous glass Coke bottle was created in 1916 to distinguish it from other competing fountain drinks. The aluminum cans I dislike came into production in 1955.

In the 1980's, Coke and its rival, Pepsi, became engaged in the greatest battle in economic history...the Cola Wars. Both companies launched massive advertising campaigns against each other, and for a short while, Pepsi became #1 in sales. In 1985, Coca-Cola came up with either its greatest or stupidest idea ever, depending on how you look at it. They replaced the old original Coke formula with a new, sweeter version, and called it New Coke. People overwhelming liked the taste of New Coke better, but for some reason they got mad that Coke had been replaced, so the original Coke came back 3 months later. Sales skyrocketed from this event, leading people to believe that it had all been a marketing ploy to increase profits.
Not much else noteworthy happened except that Coke became more and more popular, thanks to its overly obsessive propaganda. Today Coca-Cola is the #1 drink in the world, with Diet Coke being #2. Pepsi, which I guess lost the Cola Wars, is at a soft #3. All the other drinks are irrelevant...

Fun Coke Facts!

• Coke distributed the world's first coupons in 1888...offering a free glass of Coke.
• Coke was certified kosher by a rabbi in 1935.
• Only two people in the world are allowed to know the entire secret formula- the written recipe is locked in the company vault.
• The Coke logo is written in Spencerian Script font.
• Coca-Cola indirectly created the modern day image of Santa Claus...an advertisement poster depicted Santa as an old man in a red suit. The image became popular so it stuck.

Bullying: It's Still An Issue

I know everyone is tired of hearing the same thing every year, again and again; however something needs to be done because bullying is still a problem. This has escalated from a face-to-face action to being on cyberspace.

There are different ways to bully someone; many believe it's just physical contact such as hitting, but it has to start somewhere, right? Well, it can all start when a certain person dresses a certain way or says something that others normally wouldn't agree with; then someone who hears that tells their friends and they tell others until the rumor is spread throughout your school or work place. This happens everyday, everywhere.



What is Bullying

1. physical abuse 

2. verbal abuse (teasing, name calling, etc.)

3. yelling or screaming offensive language

4. excluding people from a group

5. hurtful comments

6. rude gestures or actions

7. intimidation (making someone scared of coming to school)

8. making things up to get someone in trouble

These things and more are all included in the following categories in some sort of way:

- Cyber Bullying (bullying from the internet or phone)

- Homophobic Bullying (bullying because of liking the same gender)

- Racist Bullying (bullying because of color of skin or culture)

- Sexist Bullying (bullying because of gender)

Whether we know it or not bullying has serious consequences, both for the bully and the victim. For the victim, if they get put down long enough, they can resort to suicide. Trust me, I know because here about a year or two ago, there was a kid in middle school who got bullied for so long, he concluded that suicide was the only way. For the bullies, there can be suspension and even legal actions. These legal actions include juvie, harassment charges, restraining orders, and even jail time.

What can we do to stop bullying? Well, it can all start with you!!! If you see someone getting picked on at school, then stand up and say stop! If it continues, then go get a teacher or another trusted adult who you know will help solve the conflict. Remember you are never a rat when it comes to bullying. Who knows?  It could be life or death for some innocent child.

My review of Kingdom Come!

When many people hear about this book they automatically think, well this is gonna be a generic quest of the generic Justice League as they generically beat up a generic villain for a generic reason, but it is ANYTHING but that! This story is extremely symoblistic, and well worth your time for sure.

It follows a pastor of a local church who witnesses the death a friend, and is told of how the world has been corrupted, and no one fights for the right reasons. Then The Spectre (the being that is God's judgement) shows the pastor why the world is why is is. He shows the pastor what is going on with Superman Wonder woman, and the entire Justice League 50 years into the future. At this point they have all retired and heroes and villains fight for no reason other than for the heck of it. Eventually he gets tired of it, and rallies up the whole justice league (which takes a lot of effort) and confronts the new heroes and villains.  The art is done by Alex Ross. (one of my favorite artists)

Now before you turn off this review because it sounds generic, know that I can't say much because this book has A LOT of spoilers, and that you will not be disappointed if you read it. It's a great story about redemption, trust, teamwork, and has pretty much every well known DC superhero involved in some way. And the main character isn't even superman, it's a pastor! When a superhero book can be good and not even focus on a pastor, you know you're doing something right, and the ending to this book is AMAZING. It is a very realistic take on the situation.

All in all I give Kingdom Come the rating of PERFECTION! The only negative I could possibly think of is that you may be lost on who a few minor characters are in the story, but this doesn't mess up the plot.

You should DEFINITELY read this book.  Whether you are new to comics, or have been reading for years, this is one of the best that DC has to offer.

How To: Deco Mesh Wreath

Everyone and their mother has seen a wreath of ribbon hanging on a door, but have you ever wondered how they are made? You probably just assumed that they bought it like that, but generally, that isn't the case. This is a very common DIY (do-it-yourself) project that can be customized for each event/season. In lieu of this, here's how to make a deco mesh wreath.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED: 

• Wire wreath form (shape of your choosing)
• Pipe cleaners (color of your choosing)
• One wide roll of deco mesh

STEP ONE
Start by twisting pipe cleaners onto the entire wreath frame about 1 1/2 inches apart. Set any extra pipe cleaners to the side because you might need them later.

STEP TWO
Pinch the ends of the mesh together and tie it down to the wreath form by placing it in the middle of a pipe cleaner and twisting the pipe cleaner closed.

Now pull the mesh out about 5 or 6 inches from the twisted pipe cleaner and gather it together with your hands. Find the next open pipe cleaner and place the pinched piece into the pipe cleaner and twist. This will make a natural little bubble of Deco Mesh.

Keep going always trying to use the same length of Deco Mesh and attaching it to the wire frame with the pipe cleaners.

STEP FIVE
Eventually your wreath will start to look like this.

STEP SIX
If you repeat this process all the way around the frame of the wreath, it will look like this.

For a more fuller look, add more pipe cleaners in any empty place on the wreath frame and do a second layer using the same technique of a mix of old and new pipe cleaners.





STEP SEVEN

Finish by curling the end of the deco mesh into itself and attaching it with pipe cleaner so you won't see any raw edges. This is the finished wreath with two rows of deco mesh. A hand-painted letter "P" and light feathers applied with clear drying glue finish it off.



This particular example was made for a baby shower, but the wreath can be made for any occasion, all depending on the colors and decorations you choose. Instead of doing two layers of the same color, try two different colors. Alternate orange and black for Halloween, and maybe top it off with some spooky decorations for the season.
